I was sketching at a deck party, and my host wanted to see the result. “So, that’s what you think of Vinnie!”
“No, it isn’t,” I said. “I’m not so skilled that I can bring out my feelings about a person in a sketch of them. It’s just that a thousand tiny mistakes have built up into a portrait that has a personality of its own.”
In the same vein, I’ve been playing klezmer for some years now. Either my clarinet has some hardware issues, or I’m not practicing technique enough. In any case, there are a number of interesting dynamics, trills, and alternate notes that I sprinkle in to the pieces we play. Too interesting, some might say.
On the recorder, however, pretty much what you hear is what I meant. I learned to play as a young lass and while I’m not a virtuoso, I can pretty much get it to do what I can imagine. I’m no longer struggling with hardware, but with software.
